At a media conference on Friday, Taichi Kho, who won gold in the individual competition and bronze in the men’s team event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023, said he believes that the special administrative region’s team – comprising three men’s and three women’s players – will rise to the occasion as they have done at previous events.
The 25-year-old secured his second Asian Tour title and $2 million in prize money at the International Series Morocco in June.
Another Hong Kong representative, Sophie Han, said she has been training hard and hopes to bring honor to the Hong Kong SAR team.
Han said she is confident in the players’ potential to claim medals at the games.
“Currently, I’m focusing on adjusting my training content and training plan. In the coming period, I will participate in a few competitions to test whether my training is on the right track,” Han said.
The golf events at the Asian Games will run from Sep 30 to Oct 3 on Kasugai Country Club’s East Course in Aichi.
Han, 19, described the course as a typical Japanese- or Korean-style course, with narrow fairways that allow competitors to show low scores if they play well.
Completing the SAR team’s lineup are men’s competitors Jason Hak Shun-yat and Matthew Cheung Hung-hai, and women’s players Ginnie Ding and Arianna Lau.
Tim Tang, head golf coach at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, said the golfers are following their own training plans based on experience, and as their coach, he is helping them prepare and adjusting any specific nutritional requirements.
“The players have very high expectations of themselves, and I will not put too much pressure on them,” he said.
The Hong Kong SAR team achieved its best-ever results at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, bringing home 53 medals — eight gold, 16 silver and 29 bronze.
